Desiccant Range
A desiccant is defined as a hydrating agent that attracts
and retains moisture from the atmosphere.
Desiccants actively attract moisture from the surrounding air which reduces the dew point. The dew point is the temperature at which condensation takes place.

Desiccants are used to decrease the risk of cargo damage due to condensation – or “container rain” – which results in moisture damage
What Happens Inside A
Container During Transit
Containerized cargo is subjected to significant temperature fluctuations during the transit period. As the temperature inside the container increases the entrapped air is
able to absorb more moisture. As the temperature in the container decreases, the air is not able to hold the total amount of moisture, which is then released in the form of condensation.
Types Of Moisture Damage
• Mould/mildew elimination
• Damaged/collapsed packaging
• Potential product damage
• Peeled labels
• Corrosion damage

In terms of industries, JB Anderson supplies desiccant solutions to agricultural sectors that include cocoa & coffee beans, cashew nuts, sesame seeds, sugar, grains, spices, cotton, shea, pulses as well as industrial sectors such as steel, aluminium, fruit juice, canned goods, automotive, electronics, machinery and consumer goods.
Desiccant Needs Analysis (DNA)
When it comes to transporting cargo, each shipment is unique and requires a specific approach in determining the optimum amount of desiccant needed.
Factors such as the number of days in transit, temperature variances, mode of transport, moisture content and, most importantly, cargo sensitivity to moisture all vary from shipment to shipment.
These are critical factors when calculating the ideal amount of desiccant required for a specific shipment. JB Anderson have developed software to calculate the amount of desiccant required for a specific shipment, ensuring that the optimal ratio of desiccant can be calculated prior to transit. This ensures significantly reduced desiccant wastage, as well as optimum shipment protection during transit.
