What is an IBC?

An Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) is a reusable, pallet-mounted container designed for the storage and transport of bulk liquids, powders, semi-solids, pastes, and even some solids. IBCs come in both flexible (collapsible) and rigid forms. The term “intermediate” refers to their capacity—typically between 1,000 and 1,250 liters—positioning them between smaller drums and larger tanks in terms of volume.

Why Do IBC’s exist?

Traditional rigid containers—such as drums and stainless steel tanks—often need to be returned empty, effectively doubling the transport cost per litre. In addition, these containers require intensive and costly cleaning before reuse. In contrast, collapsible IBCs offer a far more efficient alternative. They use up to 60% less space when stored or transported empty, making them ideal for both cost and space savings. Paired with the versatile ALC liner range, the same IBC can be easily reused across various products and applications, with simple filling and decanting processes.

Benefits of IBCs vs Drums

  • Greater storage efficiency: One IBC holds up to 1,250 L (330 gallons) in the space it takes to store four drums, which only carry 800 L (220 gallons).
  • Easier handling: IBCs can be moved without the need for costly pallets or shrink wrap and can be stacked up to five units high.
  • Reduced packaging waste: Unlike single-use drums, IBCs are reusable—cutting packaging waste from 96 kg to just 2.5 kg.
  • Minimized product waste: When used with ALC’s AIRMAX high-viscosity liners, IBC totes allow for complete product drainage, whereas drums often retain residual product.

Low Viscosity Liner Solutions

Our low viscosity liner solutions are specifically engineered for products that flow easily, such as juices, sauces, and other liquid food ingredients. Designed for efficiency, these liners ensure smooth filling and decanting while maintaining product integrity throughout storage and transport.

Pillow Range

Our pillow IBC liners are part of the ALC Pillow Range—an economical solution for handling low-viscosity liquids. These liners are designed for use with flexible hoses or articulating arms and offer a cost-effective option for bulk liquid packaging. While they provide reliable performance, pillow IBC liners require some manual handling during the filling process and should be used under operator supervision to ensure optimal results.

• ALC Pillow Range (Requires operator supervision)
• Cost-effective
• Fills best with flexible hose / articulating arm
• Requires some handling during filling

Quad Liners for IBCs

ALC’s range of quad liners for IBCs is engineered to deliver enhanced performance, easy handling, and optimal product recovery. Designed with smooth internal walls and reduced excess material, these liners minimise residual waste and support efficient decanting. With a variety of customisation options and compatibility with automated and manual filling systems, our quad liners are a reliable solution for high-performance bulk liquid packaging.
